The success of Random Road Watch in Cumbria has resulted in other counties looking seriously at adopting the same strategy.
Introduction
Cumbria Safety Cameras
Cumbria Safety Cameras is the speed reduction arm of the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership. It's the task of Cumbria Safety Cameras to cut speeding and reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in collisions.
The public face of Cumbria Safety Cameras are yellow vans that monitor the road network in the county.
Most of the work, however, is carried out "behind the scenes."
CSC carries out regular surveys on the county's roads using passive radar devices that record date, time, vehicle class and speed. This, together with accident statistics supplied by the police, enables CSC to obtain an overview of driver behaviour and driving patterns, allowing the management team to create intelligence-led road safety initiatives. The way that Cumbria Safety Cameras implements these is through the Four Es - education, engineering, enforcement and evaluation.
Contrary to popular belief, the campaign is not about income generation as the camera unit is funded by a Government grant which is not dependant on the number of tickets issued. All speeding fines go direct to the Treasury
